Areas of Expertise
human tissue and Biobanking
Dr. Troyer founded Provia as a pathologist and is a practicing diagnostic surgical pathologist. He is experienced in handling and optimizing cryopreserved and formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues. He founded the Genitourinary Tissue Bank at UT Health San Antonio. It has remained functional and utilized after 20 years.
study design
Studies using human tissue often overestimate the amount and type of tissue that is available from clinics and biobanks. Understanding these limitations and opportunities can make or break a project.
Pathology work flow
Any diagnostic test new to the clinical landscape must accommodate existing workflows. Any changes to existing pathology workflows will meet headwinds. Our familiarity with specimen handling from clinic to the microscope can facilitate the implementation of diagnostic tests.
INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD; INTERINSTITUTIONAL COLLABORATIONS
Dr. Troyer has facilitated sample procurement from diverse entities including community hospitals, a university hospital and the Veterans Administration. He has conducted numerous studies requiring IRB protocols.
effective collaboration
Dr. Troyer has published papers as a co-author in studies supported by the Canary Foundation and the Early Detection Research Network
data elements and data management
There are freezers full of human serum and tissues. These are of minimal value without the right data elements. Establishing a linked data base is critical for the value of specimens. Handling and protecting the data are equally critical.
